Dr. Arjen Luijendijk, "Sand in the Eyes of a Researcher"
A global scale assessment of the occurrence of sandy beaches and rates of shoreline change has been conducted by Dr. Luijendijk and his colleagues. He found that at least 31% of the world’s ice-free shoreline is sandy. Rates of erosion and accretion were assessed. Dr. Luijendijk will discuss his research and describe the practical implications of his work such as what we, as sand enthusiasts, can do to help preserve natural sandy places and what we can expect at beaches in the future.
Dr. Arjen Luijendijk is a Senior Coastal Engineer and expert advisor at Deltares and is on the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosiences at Delft University of Technology. He earned a PhD in seamless coastal morphodynamic modeling focused on the mega-nourishment called the Sand Engine. He developed a global beach erosion database using historic satellite imagery and is working on predicting future behavior of the world’s beaches as impacted by human development and changing climate. For pre-reading, Dr. Luijendijk’s publications covering coastal morphology, sandy beaches, etc. can be found here.
